Project Overview

The goal of the Southern California WiFI project, is to design, build and deploy a community owned and operated wide area wireless network, utilizing both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

It will serve any end user device which has a radio capable of communicating over 802.11 b/g/n. A number of back haul technologies such as fiber/xDSL/cable, 802.11y, and Infrared/Laser links will be used to provide inter node connectivity.

This network will be used to deliver both non profit and for profit services to consumers and businesses. Some examples of services which the network will be optimized for are:

1) Carrier grade Voice over IP including full end to end encryption.

2) IP Television (with both traditional and user generated content)

3) Business process outsourcing (such as payment processing and advertising)

4) Neighborhood portals and other consumer enabling technology.

5) General internet access.

The network itself will be non profit, but services carried over the network can be either for profit or non profit.

We hope to see many providers step up and provide services over the SoCalWiFI.net network. Known Element Enterprises plans to provide managed ISP services over the network. Others are free to provide ISP services and other premium (triple play etc) services on the network.
