Introduction
The scope of this project is quite large. It is in a similar vein to the Free Software Foundations goal of building a completely free operating system, or the Linux kernel supporting every type of hardware/configuration available. In reality the project will never be finished, just as any network is never finished. It's always changing and evolving to support the users needs.
However we are in the process of establishing milestones to measure progress against such that we can focus our efforts and move towards the goal of providing a large scale wireless network from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.
High Level Milestones
2009 and 2010
Build a complete network in El Segundo CA. Everything from the radios/mesh, Network Operations Center and application stack. Why El Segundo? This is where the core team lives and works. Also a large amount of network/systems/radio/development talent is available in El Segundo.
2011 through 2013
Replicate the network throughout Los Angeles city and county.
2013 through 2020
Replicate the network throughout the rest of Southern California.
