Geospatial Project
The SoCalWiFI.net project aims to provide wireless coverage to 10 counties. As part of this we need to map out the counties, and figure out existing coverage and where to deploy new equipment. We are in the process of downloading / purchasing available GIS data for each county and loading it into a data warehouse.
Once the base data (streets, houses/businesses, utility (power/water/phone) infrastructure) is loaded, we can then layer additional data sets (solar/wind energy suitability, existing wifi coverage, fiber connection points, demographic data) on top. We are also including topology information.
Please find more information below.
Data sources
Generic data sources:
1) NationalAtlas.gov raw data
2) National Renewable Energy Lab data layers
3) Fact finder
4) Seamless.usgs.gov
5) Yahoo maps/local/traffic
6) FCC uls database dumps
County specific data sources:
Please see the individual wiki pages for each county for more information on the GIS data available.
Data model
Base data
Residences (all data from tiger address/GPS etc)
Businesses (all data from tiger+ yahoo maps/local info. Need to put into a dbf file.)
Govt facilities (local/state/federal)
Demographic data
National atlas/fact finder/2000 census data etc). Things like density and income levels.
Existing wireless coverage.
Using wigle dumps and FCC database dumps figure out existing spectrum usage, and existing antenna structures.
Existing wired coverage.
Using likely or known fiber points, dsl/cable coverage maps etc.
Topographic data.
